Military Size Quiz

This quiz compares how many active-duty personnel each country keeps in uniform — the full-time soldiers, sailors, and air crews on duty today, not reservists or paramilitary forces. The figures come from Global Firepower's 2024 survey of active military manpower.

China fields the largest active force on Earth at roughly two million personnel, followed by India (about 1.46 million), the United States (1.33 million), Russia (1.32 million), and North Korea (1.28 million).

Size isn't strength

A big army isn't the same as a powerful one. North Korea keeps roughly one in every twenty citizens in uniform, yet spends a tiny fraction of what the United States does on defense. Ukraine's active force has grown to around 900,000 since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. Some countries have no standing army at all: Costa Rica abolished its military in 1948, Iceland relies on NATO membership and a coast guard, and Andorra leaves its defense to Spain and France.
